Canticle of the Turning: My Soul Cries Out with a Joyful Shout

Canticle of the Turning: My Soul Cries Out with a Joyful Shout

Flexibility is key to the arrangement of this sturdy Irish tune. A children’s or youth choir could sing the first verse, with the adult choir joining on the refrain and leading subsequent verses. The assembly may be invited to join on the following refrains.

Composer Commentary

I arranged this piece for the annual Candlelight Service of Lessons and Carols held at my church, St. Luke’s Lutheran, in Park Ridge, Illinois. All of the choirs and instrumental groups participate in this service, a wonderful intergenerational musical experience. The youth choir sang the first verse, with the children's and adult choirs joining on the first refrain. The children’s choir sang the beginning of the second verse, “Though I am small, my God, my all, you work great things in me . . .” with the adult women joining in parts at “Your very name puts the proud to shame . . .” The assembly was invited to sing on the following refrain, and then the men of the choir took over on the beginning of the third verse. The piece builds to a wonderful crescendo, adding a soprano descant on the final verse and refrain. The choirs and instruments wrap the piece up with a coda.
