Miracle in Mystery

Miracle in Mystery

The richness of a deeply reflective new text is further warmed by an equally original musical setting, gentle yet lush. With wide presentation flexibility from 2-part mixed with organ/keyboard to SATB with oboe and string quartet, this anthem can serve starting in Advent as a Lessons and Carols response to the Genesis 3 reading but is equally effective throughout Christmas.

Composer Commentary

The inspirations for this new setting are twofold: a desire to contribute to the "O magnum mysterium" tradition and to do so in some homage to the rich, gentle style of Carl Schalk, as seen especially in his much-loved "Before the Marvel of This Night." The piece was premiered at the church I serve as organist, First Presbyterian (PCUSA) in Peachtree City, Georgia, in December 2014, with the benefit of the use of both oboe and string quartet. Special thanks are due to my colleague, FPC music director David Stivers, for the suggestion of the use of the string quartet.
