Composer Commentary

This collection contains settings from music from many cultures, styles, and times. There are chorales, plainsong-like settings such as "Triune God, Be Thou Our Stay" (tune: Gott der vater, wohn uns Bei), familiar hymns such as God That Madest Earth and Heaven (tune: Ar Hyd Y Nos), Ye Servants of God (tune: Lyons), Let us With a Gladsome Mind (tune: Monkland). All tunes used are presented completely and in a straight-forward manner.

Of particular interest is the setting of Graham George's "Ride on! Ride on in Majesty" -- it may be used on Palm Sunday and other occasions. Dedicated to Charles Tompkins, it contains a fugue leading to a majestic ending.

These settings are intended to be played as voluntaries on the hymns sung at services using these hymns. They may also find a use in other services not connected with a specific season. There is a real need for general hymn-settings--this need inspired the composition of this collection; I do hope it will be found useful.
