Composer Commentary

This new hymn was written for the hymn festival, “A Transfigured Christ for a Transforming World,” held at Wartburg College, Waverly, Iowa, in February 2014. Paul Hoffman and I had the idea for the hymn while we were both serving at Lutheran Summer Music in the summer of 2013. The hymn festival was part of a two-day event of the same name, which included workshop sessions by Rev. Hoffman and musician Daniel Schwandt, who was organist for the hymn festival.

Paul sent me the text early in the fall of 2013 and it struck me as a powerful text from the beginning. I worked on the tune and setting for the next several months. We brought together church choirs from Lutheran churches in Waverly and the Chapel Choir from Wartburg College to lead the hymn festival. The tune name, WAVERLY, is  the town where the tune was written, home of Wartburg College.
