Composer Commentary

There exists a marvelous and diverse repertoire of hymns that focus on the Holy Spirit. I enjoyed identifying these five hymn tunes and working out an arrangement that, I hope, highlights the specific genre of each. The treatment of the chant-based “Creator Spirit, Heavenly Dove” is quite different from the sturdy setting of the early American tune RESTORATION, “Loving Spirit.” The rather reflective setting of “Every Time I Feel the Spirit” complements the flowing version of “O Living Breath of God.” “O Day Full of Grace,” one of my favorite hymns, receives three treatments: a cheerful introduction, a more lyrical inner movement, and a triumphal conclusion.
