Composer Commentary

This piece was commissioned by United Lutheran Church in Oak Park, Illinois, for the annual ecumenical community Thanksgiving service. This years-long tradition of gathering together to celebrate Thanksgiving includes local Christian churches as well as Jewish and Muslim brothers and sisters. Given the wide diversity of participants, I chose to use a psalm text that could be embraced by all. Each of the participating choirs learned the piece on their own, and put it together in one massed rehearsal immediately preceding the service. The piece proved to be a wonderful vehicle for expressing thanks to God in keeping with the ecumenical nature of the service.
