The Day of Pentecost

The Day of Pentecost

Hal Hopson has created another wonderful marriage of various musical styles in this setting for the third great festival of the Christian year, composed for SATB voices and solo with piano accompaniment or optional bass (string or electric bass). The piano accompaniment is integral to the anthem, suggesting the fire and drama of the first Day of Pentecost.

Composer Commentary

“The Day of Pentecost” is a commissioned anthem for Woodlawn Chapel Presbyterian Church, located in the St. Louis area. This church is known for incorporating various eclectic,  global, and traditional musical styles in its worship. This anthem represents that tradition by the inclusion of both a plainsong hymn and an African American spiritual.

The piano accompaniment is integral to the anthem, suggesting the fire and drama of the first Day of Pentecost.

There is an optional Latin text to the hymn “Veni Creator Spiritus.” The anthem concludes with a very effective tenor or soprano solo undergirded with a four-part pallet of sustained chords sung by the choir.

This anthem is certain to be enjoyed by both choirs and congregations.
