Composer Commentary

The idea behind the two volumes of A New Liturgical Year is to provide some of the most interesting and useful settings of hymn and chorale tunes by composers from the 20th century, along with intonations and alternate harmonizations for congregational singing. Arranged in liturgical year order, most of the settings are "one time through the tune," thus relatively brief. The books are inspired in part by Albert Riemenschneider's edition of J. S. Bach's Orgelbüchlein. Like Bach's "Little Organ Book," most of the settings are relatively brief and along with the intonations and harmonizations, are intended not just for performance but also for study as examples of creative ways to improvise upon a given tune.  If feasible from a performance perspective, settings have been transposed into keys most normally used for the singing of the tunes.
