Peter's confession, that Jesus is “the Messiah, the Son of the living God,” is rock solid. Jesus is the stone rejected by the builders that has become the cornerstone. The psalmist celebrates God as “my rock in whom I put my trust.” Paul refers to Christ as the “spiritual rock” that followed the children of Israel in the wilderness. Even the Greek petros, from which Peter’s name comes, means stone. The assembly gathers again today to honor the Son of the living God and longs to be recognized as companions of Jesus.
