ELCA Calendar Response
Augsburg Fortress serves as the publishing ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, (ELCA). In keeping with this mission, we will be incorporating Evangelical Lutheran Worship, the ELCA's forthcoming primary worship resource into the content of many new Augsburg Fortress resources.
One of these changes includes the way Sundays and festivals are named during the Time after Pentecost and the Time after Epiphany. Since the Revised Common Lectionary was recommended for use by the ELCA in 1994, the readings after Pentecost were are no longer referenced by Sunday, such as the "Fifth Sunday after Pentecost," but became tied to dates.
In the church year calendar presented in Evangelical Lutheran Worship, the Sundays in these "green seasons" cite "lectionary numbers" that refer to the set of sequenced lectionary readings and propers, beginning with the Baptism of Our Lord (Lectionary 1) and continuing in the Time after Pentecost. These Sundays may also be identified by date, such as "Sunday, July 14." The new numbering is envisioned as a simpler system and more similar to other Christian denominations. During this time of transition, some dated resources may still include references to the consecutive numbering of the Sundays after the Day of Pentecost.
For your convenience, printable lectionary conversion charts are available.
