Aaron David Miller
Aaron David Miller is widely renowned as both a performer and a composer. His specialties include performances of early music on organ and harpsichord, as well as organ improvisation. His compositions range from song cycles and musical theater works to sacred choral and organ works, many of which have been published by Augsburg Fortress.
Dr. Miller?s talents have won him several awards in organ performance, composition, and related fields. In 1996 he won the top prize at the AGO National Improvisation Competition, and in 1998 he won the Bach and Improvisation prizes at the Calgary International Organ Festival. Awards for his compositions include the 1995 Colgate Award his work Ruins at Ayre for percussion ensemble. In addition, he received the 1997 Saul Braverman Award for his scholarship in music theory and the 1999 Helen Cohn Award for research in Medieval and Renaissance organ music.
Dr. Miller began his organ studies with Carlene Neihart in Kansas City and continued with David Schrader in Chicago, where he attended the Chicago Academy for the Arts. During his undergraduate studies at the Eastman School of Music he studied organ with David Craighead, David Higgs, and Michael Ferris. He completed his graduate organ studies with McNeil Robinson at the Manhattan School of Music, earning a DMA in 1999. Dr. Miller?s composition studies began at the Chicago Academy of the Arts, with Bruce Horst. At Eastman he studied composition with Samuel Adler and Joseph Schwantner, as well as orchestration with Pulitzer Prize winning composer Christopher Rouse.
In addition to his credentials as a performer and composer, Dr. Miller has held various positions as a teacher and church musician. From 1996 to 1999 he was a member of the theory faculty at the Manhattan School of Music. In 1999 he also taught Organ Performance and Organ Literature at the Masters program in Sacred Music at St. Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Indiana. In addition, he has led master classes in organ performance and improvisation at AGO chapters across the country. From 1999-2000 he served as Organist and Assistant Director of Music at Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago. Dr. Miller is currently the Music Director at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Minneapolis, MN.
