If I retype something, do I need to get permission to make copies of it?

It does not matter whether you photocopy it, retype it, do calligraphy of it on parchment, or chisel it in stone: if you are making additional copies of copyrighted work and what you're doing is not a "fair use" of the material, then you will need to get permission from the owner of the copyright. The right to reproduce the material in any form is one of the exclusive rights that belong to the copyright holder, regardless of what method you use to make the copies.
