Is there a list of all the public domain hymns?

While there are reference works that can help you research the status of a copyright, there is no one definitive list of what is in the public domain. It would be nearly impossible to prepare and maintain a comprehensive list because materials can be considered public domain for many different reasons, including:

• The copyright term, including all available renewal periods, may have expired.
• The copyright was not renewed at the appropriate time.
• The copyright notice was omitted or improperly published according to the requirements of the copyright law in effect when it was published. Also, new translations of public domain texts or new musical arrangements of public domain tunes can appear to give new copyright protection to old, familiar works.
