WINTER 2009 MUSIC CLINICS
Augsburg Fortress offers biannual Music Clinics for continuing education of church musicians and enrichment of music in worship. Held in a variety of locations, each clinic features a variety of reading sessions including choral, and piano/organ. Our well-known clinicians offer their own character and wisdom during the presentation of music from a variety of publishers. During the winter, a variety of breakout sessions are offered. These clinics are always free of charge, with choral packets available for only $1 per packet that include copies of music for attendees to keep.

New Jersey and East: PA turnpike West to Exit 339 Fort Washington. Take exit road straight to Pennsylvania Ave, turn right on PA Avenue to the dead end at Bethlehem Pike, left turn on Bethlehem Pike. Right turn onto Pa-73 (Skippack Pike) Go straight through the US 202 (DeKalb Pike) intersection. Continue on 73 to St. John's on left.

travel on Huger Street in the left lane for 1.5 miles, turn left on Blossom Street, travel in left lane on Blossom Street for 2.6 miles (the road will narrow to two lanes after 1.7 miles),

pass Dorn VA Hospital and Woodhill Mall on your left,
keep moving straight ahead following Hwy 76 & 378 signs (do not bear right at Bojangles on Hwy 16),
cross Beltline Boulevard,
pass Dunbar Funeral Home and Piggly Wiggly on your left,

Clinician Biographies
Craig Arnold Dr. Craig Arnold is Director of Choral Activities, Conductor of
the Nordic Choir, and Professor of Music at Luther College in Decorah, IA
following the 57 year tenure of Weston Noble. Dr. Arnold returns to Luther
having served on its music faculty in the early 1980s. At that time, he founded
the musical celebration now known as Christmas at Luther, along with four of the
college's current vocal music ensembles. Prior to his return to Luther, he was
Music Director of Manhattan Concert Productions and Conductor of the New York
City Chorale and Chamber Orchestra. He previously served as Director of Choral
Activities at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo and at Luther's sister
institution, Capital University in Columbus, OH. He has high school teaching
experience.
Bruce Bengston is Director of Music at Luther Memorial Church, Madison, Wisconsin. Responsible for the choral and instrumental programs of the parish, he directs the adult, youth and children's choirs. A bell choir, recorder ensemble, and ad hoc brass and string ensembles are further volunteer opportunities for members and friends of the parish. As organist he has responsibility for the 56 rank Austin(1967), 19 stop Steere and Sons(1893) and the 3 stop Bedient portative(1986). These instruments are heard weekly during the University of Wisconsin academic year at a half-hour Wednesday noon concert played by Mr. Bengtson. He is active in the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians and American Guild of Organists, and is immediate past-president of the Midwest region of ALCM. Two commissioned anthems have been published by Augsburg Fortress.
John Ferguson
John Ferguson earned a B.M. from Oberlin, an M.M. from Kent State University, and a D.M.A. from the Eastman School of Music, where he studied with Russel Saunders. His responsibilities include directing the church music-organ program, teaching organ and conducting the St. Olaf Cantorei. Ferguson came to St. Olaf in 1983 from Minneapolis where he served Central Lutheran Church as Music Director and Organist, an appointment accepted in 1978 after a 15-year tenure on the music faculty at Kent State University. While at Kent State he also served as Organist-Choirmaster of the United Church of Christ, Kent, Ohio.
He is respected as a fine teacher and performer, and his skill as improviser and leader of congregational song has received national acclaim. Each year he prepares and leads many festivals across the country both for local congregations and professional gatherings. A Ferguson hymn festival is much more than an inspiring organ recital, according to Emily Brink, Past President of the Hymn Society, "He involves everyone present in a glorious community of sound. Everyone gets to perform."
Dr. Ferguson is the author of numerous books and articles on church music and organ building. His choral and organ music is published by Augsburg, Concordia, Galaxy, G.I.A., Hope, Kjos, Morning Star, Selah and Stainer and Bell.
Robert Lau holds degrees from Lebanon Valley College, the Eastman School of Music and Catholic University. He has done additional graduate work at Westminster Choir College, Teachers' College of Columbia University, and has participated in the Carnegie Hall Workshops, where he studied with the late Robert Shaw.
Dr. Lau is Organist/Choirmaster at Mt. Calvary Episcopal Church in Camp Hill, PA, and is an adjunct member of the School of Humanities at Penn State Harrisburg. He has published over 200 sacred choral and keyboard works with the major music publishing houses of the United States, and regularly conducts and adjudicates festivals as well as composing commissioned choral and keyboard works. He is the Artistic Director of Jubilate! Choral Ensemble of Gettysburg, PA.
Aaron David Miller Dr. Miller's compositions have won critical acclaim. He has received numerous commissions, including the Donald Sutherland Music Ministries Commission for a new Easter Anthem. The Toledo Symphony commissioned a work, which was performed in celebration of their 60th anniversary season. The Seattle Symphony presented the west coast premiere of his work, "Advent Fanfare" for brass octet and organ. His Concerto for Two Organists, which was premiered and recorded by the Zurich Symphony, is available on the Ethereal label. Dr. Miller's many solo organ, choral, and orchestra compositions are published by Augsburg Fortress, Paraclete Press, ECS and Kjos Publishing House. Aaron Miller's early organ studies were with Carlene Neihart and David Schrader. His earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music, where he studied organ performance with David Craighead, Russell Saunders, David Higgs, and Michael Farris, and composition with Samuel Adler and Joseph Schwantner. His graduate studies were taken at the Manhattan School of Music, where he completed his Master's degree and DMA, studying composition and organ performance with McNeil Robinson.
Dr. Miller was recently appointed the Director of Music and Organist at House of Hope Presbyterian Church in St. Paul, Minnesota. He and his wife, Nina, have a four year old son, Zachary.

Mark Mummert is Church Organist and Chorus Director at Christ the King Evangelical Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas. At Christ the King, Mark conducts the Chorus, the Youth Choir, the Taize Ensemble and leads the assembly song at the liturgies of the congregation. In addition, he serves as organist for the Bach Society of Houston, a ministry of Christ the King. Prior to his call to Houston, he was Seminary Musician at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia for eighteen years (1990-2008), where he conducted the Seminary Choir, was Cantor to the daily Chapel, and taught courses in hymnody and liturgical music.
