Session Descriptions

  1. Global Music and the Singer (Burkhardt)
  2. Global Music and the Organist (Langlois) These workshops will focus on the question, "What do we need to know about global music to be able to sing it, play it, and lead it?" Ultimately the goal is not an authentic recreation of a piece of global music, but rather a meaningful expression of it based on 1) its context in worship, 2) understanding its cultural context, and 3) community ownership. The singer's workshop will provide hands-on experiences and choral resources for understanding and performing music of the African, Latino, Asian, and Native American traditions in addition to chant and music of the European tradition. In the organist's workshop keyboard resources will be shared and practical ideas about organ technique that help the organist play and lead hymns of other cultures and styles in a way that is musically energized and true to the spirit of the hymn will be demonstrated.
  3. Enlivening Liturgy (Burkhardt and Langlois) The greatest challenge of the church musician is to lead music that is repeated from week to week within the context of worship in motivating and inspiring ways. This session will look at how organ registration/instrumentation, articulation, harmonization, and pulse "enliven" liturgy. In addition, ideas on how to keep the congregation interested in singing the liturgy, balancing repetition and change, and incorporating alternatives into the weekly liturgical ritual will be shared. Resources for settings of the Lutheran communion liturgy as well as other communion and non-communion liturgical settings will be highlighted.
  4. Hymn Festival: "At All Times and in All Places" (Burkhardt and Langlois) A celebration of global hymnody led by Langlois and Burkhardt, with choir, handbells, wind and percussion instruments, and organ.
  5. Organ Technique Workshop and Mini Master Class Bring some organ repertoire or hymn preludes/introductions that you've been working on that somehow puzzle you, and we'll learn from each other's questions and dilemmas.
  6. Working with Children's Choirs (Burkhardt) This hands–on session with a demonstration children's choir will focus on a whole person approach to singing and learning. Rehearsal techniques, teaching strategies, and new repertoire will be shared throughout the workshop.
